Character Building and Change

Last week we considered change from the perspective of a life-long learner. We are always changing, always growing    . . .  or not? Do you think that the quality of your character – who you really are – is a result of ongoing learning?  Or, do you think your character – who you really are – develops randomly or through some other means?

Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady and wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, said this about learning and growth:

“People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.”

Do you you agree or disagree with this statement? Reflect upon how these words have impacted your growth – even your own character development. Consider the words “honestly” and “courageously.”  How does this quote apply to your experience with growth and change?

Tumbling into Fall Colors

With the full forces of seasonal change upon us, are you equipped to meet the challenges of the new season? Perhaps, like many, you have stored your talents and skills – even your emotions and knowledge – for the changes that you meet at this time.

Eric Hoffer, American philosopher and social writer said:

“In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.”

In Hoffer’s definition:  Are you a learner? Or, are you learned?

Have your skills, knowledge, emotional state prepared you to deal with change and challenges of a new season – perhaps the beginning of  a new season of your life?

Spinning a Good Yarn into Words

Welcome to the wonderful world of  journal writing!  Whether you are a newbie to personal written reflections or you’ve been a word-wise recorder for decades, a 30-minute weekly visit to this cozy corner will rouse your muse and soothe your soul. You may even decide to write on this topic two or three times a week – even if for only 10 or 15 minutes!

As you reflect and write upon each weekly passage I offer, you will learn more about yourself and become a stronger writer in the process!

There are many reasons to keep a journal and many methods available to record your thoughts.  For now, however, we are snuggling up in a cozy corner of your choice where the knitting needles will morph into our writing implement of choice.

JOURNALING TIPS:

  1. Find a quiet and pleasant spot that you can consistently visit each week to write for 20 to 30 minutes. In the early morning you may be most inspired; perhaps, before bedtime when the day is winding down is best for you.
  2. Select a notebook for your writing. I like one that is spiral and colorful.  Select what is attractive and pleasing to you.
  3. Pick a writing tool that feels comfortable. I like fine point colored felt tip pens. You can also use a regular ball point pen – a writing tool that won’t fade over time.
  4. Light a candle – scented is nice, but not necessary.
  5. Do not critique your writing. You are not writing for anyone but yourself!
  6. I like to put a note on the front page of my journal reminding anyone who might find and open that these are the personal thoughts of Trish and are not for viewing by others. I also like to add that it is not my intention to offend anyone in my journal, as my thoughts are simply my reflections on my feelings.
  7. Again, DO allow your thoughts to flow on the page as you ponder the topic of the week without being your own critic!

Look for a new prompt every Friday!

Seasons and Change

TOPIC OF THE WEEK:

SEASONS CHANGE . . .MAKING POSITIVE CHANGE

 CB108220

Seasons do signal change and a new season of autumn is now here.  Consider for a moment the Words of Wisdom of a very young Woman.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” ~ Anne Frank

How do you make positive change happen each day?  Is what you do important? Why? Why not?

Happy Journaling!

See you October 3!
